Revitalize Home serves as benchmark for retrofitting and energy efficiency

With a home generally being a person’s largest single investment, homeowners want structures that last. More so, they want buildings that provide comfort, air quality and a return on that investment.

Dow Building Solutions and Cobblestone Homes constructed the Revitalize Home as a means for builders, contractors, remodelers and homeowners alike to better understand the opportunities for retrofitting homes for energy efficiency. It was also designed to spur those involved in renovation projects to go beyond standard upgrades and improve the overall performance of the building envelope.

The project, a 1,200-square-foot home in Midland, Mich., focused on simple, affordable insulation and air sealing efforts that can make a significant impact. With no other structural or mechanical improvements, such as window replacement or HVAC upgrades, the results showed a 30% savings on monthly energy costs.**
Those quick adjustments also contributed to lowering the home’s Home Energy Rating System (HERS) index score from 135 to 85.
