Top 5 benefits of geothermal

Top 5 benefits of geothermal

I was asked to name the five benefits of geothermal — well, there are more than five, but for now I'll list the benefits that I feel are the top five.

The first and the best benefit is the efficiency. With a properly designed geothermal system (emphasizing properly), efficiencies can be 400 to 500 percent. This means that these systems are incredibly efficient! No other heating and cooling equipment can make this claim. (This does not include providing up to 60 percent of the homeowner's hot water.)

Comfort is the second benefit. With a properly designed system the level of comfort is unmatched. The geothermal heating and cooling system maintains an even comfort in all areas of the home — warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

The third benefit is maintenance. With fewer moving parts there is less to service. Also, the geothermal unit is protected from the weather by being inside of your home. Only the loops are outside and are safely buried at least five feet below the ground surface.

Fourthly, there are no emissions. Geothermal units use no fossil fuel and actually use much less electricity than other electrically run furnaces or air conditioners. Therefore, you're putting less demand on the electrical grid. (Remember these units are 400-500 percent efficient.)

Our fifth and final benefit is life expectancy. A properly designed geothermal unit's life expectancy is 25 to 30 years and a geothermal loop life expectancy is 50 years. No other heating or cooling equipment comes close. (Conventional equipment has life expectancy of 15 to 20 years.)

As you can see, even with just these five benefits, the geothermal system is superior to the typical heating and cooling system.
